I was reluctant to subscribe to iTunes Match, because I wasn't sure I'd be able to navigate it and take advantage of its features beyond just having a cloud backup of my music. I read about this book on one of the Apple blogs that I follow and decided to download it. I read it, and it convinced me to subscribe, because it explained in simple terms how iTunes Match works, and it gave great tips for how to take advantage of the various perks of the service. As the book points out, one of the greatest perks of iTunes Match is that you can essentially upgrade every song in your library that is either lower quality than the versions on iTunes, or locked with DRM. The book gives the reader incredibly easy instructions to follow about how to do that. I followed those instructions and successfully upgraded over 5,000 of the 8,500 songs in my library. Unfortunately, what the book does not tell you, and what I learned after deleting the older versions of the songs in favor of the "upgraded" versions that I downloaded via iTunes Match, is that iTunes sometimes "matches" uncensored songs to the censored (or "clean") versions. In other words, if you had Eminem's uncensored "8 Mile" soundtrack in your iTunes library, even if you downloaded it from iTunes, and you delete it in favor of the upgraded "match" version, you will end up having only the censored version in your library. I'm not sure how widespread that problem may be, and I can't imagine there's a way to create a smart playlist to avoid this particular quirk of upgrading, but everyone should know it before taking the advice in the book to upgrade songs and delete the older versions of the songs. Otherwise, I think the book is great and has some great and user-friendly tips about iTunes Match and what you can get out of it.Product details
